Can You Work Two Jobs in the UAE? Part-Time Permit Guide

Yes, you can work two jobs in the UAE, provided you have the correct authorization for the second role. For many mainland private-sector employees, this means the second employer obtains a MoHRE part-time work permit before work begins. Your existing residence visa, an employer’s verbal agreement or a weekend-only schedule does not replace that permit.

The route depends on who regulates each employer, your residence status and the proposed working arrangement. Here is what to check before accepting a second salary, including employer consent, documents, application responsibilities and working hours.

When can you work two jobs in the UAE legally?

The UAE private-sector employment framework recognizes part-time work. The UAE Government’s guidance on working for two employers explains how additional employment can be authorized.

However, there is no single permission that covers every combination of employers and residence categories.

Your Situation What to Check Before Starting
You have a mainland private-sector job and a second mainland offer Whether the second employer should apply for a MOHRE part-time work permit
Either employer operates in a free zone The relevant free-zone authority’s rules and any additional approvals
You hold family-sponsored residence Which work permit the hiring employer must obtain without changing your residence sponsorship
You hold a Golden Visa The employment permit required for the proposed role and employer
You want to invoice clients independently Whether you need a freelance permit or business licence rather than an employee work permit

This guide mainly addresses employment with mainland businesses regulated by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE). Government employment, domestic work and employment within jurisdictions such as DIFC or ADGM require separate checks.

What does a part-time work permit allow?

A part-time arrangement involves working fewer hours or days than a comparable full-time role. The permit allows an eligible establishment to employ you under that arrangement, subject to approval and the agreed contract.

For someone already employed, it can provide a lawful route to a second job without transferring their existing residence sponsorship. The second role usually requires an additional work permit, not a second residence visa.

Permission is tied to the approved employment arrangement. A permit for one employer should not be treated as open authorization to work for unrelated businesses.

If you are unsure whether the offer is genuinely part-time, temporary or another employment model, compare the different MoHRE work permit categories before preparing an application.

Do you need your current employer’s NOC?

For the MoHRE part-time permit route, plan to obtain a no-objection certificate (NOC) from your current employer. MoHRE’s permit-specific document checklist includes a no-objection letter from the current employer. The second employer should verify the live requirements for your application through the MoHRE services directory.

You may encounter general explanations of earlier part-time arrangements stating that the original employer’s approval is unnecessary. Do not treat those summaries as a waiver of documents required for the application being submitted.

An NOC and a work permit serve different purposes. The NOC records the employer’s lack of objection; the permit provides the relevant employment authorization. Neither replaces the other when both are required.

Also review confidentiality, conflicts of interest and any non-compete terms before accepting work with a competing business.

Eligibility and documents to prepare

For the standard MoHRE part-time permit route, the worker generally needs to be at least 18 and hold valid UAE residence. The hiring establishment must also meet MoHRE’s requirements, including having an appropriate license and an eligible activity for the proposed occupation.

The application documents commonly include:

  • Passport copy: A clear copy with the required remaining validity, generally at least six months.
  • Photograph: A recent color photograph meeting the application specifications.
  • Residence and identity records: Valid residence details and Emirates ID information, as requested.
  • Signed job offer: The official offer signed by the employer and worker, with the correct employment arrangement.
  • Current employer’s NOC: Where required by the applicable permit checklist.
  • Qualifications or professional approvals: Academic certificates for relevant skill classifications and professional licenses for regulated occupations.

Not every occupation requires an attested degree. The requirements depend on the job classification and profession. Healthcare, education and other regulated fields may need approval from the competent authority in addition to the work permit.

The employer should check that your name, passport details, occupation and company information match across the application. Resolve expired documents or inconsistent details before submission rather than waiting for a correction request.

How to apply for permission to take a second job

1. Confirm the authority and the employment model

Start with the prospective second employer. Ask whether it is registered with MoHRE or a free-zone authority and which permit it proposes to obtain.

Describe your current position accurately, including your residence sponsor, existing work permit and proposed schedule. A company should not select a permit simply because it appears faster or cheaper.

Agree on the role, pay, working days and hours before signing. If the work is a short assignment or a specific project, the employer should check whether a temporary or mission-related route is more appropriate than an ongoing part-time arrangement.

2. Prepare the offer, consent and supporting documents

The second employer normally initiates the application. You provide the required personal documents and sign the official job offer.

Obtain any required NOC before submission. Your current employer’s consent should relate to the actual arrangement, particularly where scheduling or a potential conflict of interest needs to be addressed.

Check that the offer reflects what you negotiated. A verbal promise about flexible hours is not enough if the written terms describe something different. Keep copies of the signed offer and any supporting employer correspondence.

3. Submit the application and wait for approval

The hiring establishment submits through the relevant official channel or an authorized business service center. MoHRE may approve the request, ask for corrections or require additional documents.

Do not start productive work while the permit is pending. An application receipt, payment confirmation or promise from the employer is not the same as an issued permit.

After approval, ask for a copy of the permit and employment documents. Check the employer’s name, occupation, validity and agreed arrangement. Your second employer should also explain how it will handle any required employment registration and payroll obligations.

Permit validity, fees and processing time

MoHRE’s part-time work permit is generally issued for one year. Confirm the validity shown on your actual permit and arrange any necessary renewal before it expires. Your residence status must also remain valid.

For costs, request an itemized breakdown distinguishing government fees from service-center charges, applicable taxes and any separate translation, attestation or professional-licensing expenses. A work permit application does not automatically mean that you need to purchase a new residence visa package.

Under UAE private-sector labor rules, employers must not charge workers recruitment and employment costs, directly or indirectly. Be cautious if a prospective employer asks you to pay an informal fee simply to be allowed to work.

Processing depends on a complete application, the employer’s eligibility and any required approvals. Check the current service target rather than relying on an advertised turnaround as a guarantee. An outstanding NOC, expired passport or missing professional approval can delay the process.

If the second job ends early, ask the employer to handle the required permit cancellation. Do not assume it disappears when you stop attending work.

Working hours and contract restrictions still matter

A permit does not remove your obligations to either employer. The proposed schedules must be compatible with applicable working-time, overtime and rest requirements.

Do not assume that two employers can each schedule you for a full working week simply because they hold separate permits. Part-time authorization is not blanket approval to combine two unrestricted full-time schedules.

Before accepting the second offer, check these points against both contracts:

  • Scheduling: Confirm there are no overlapping shifts, on-call duties or regular overtime conflicts.
  • Confidentiality: Keep customer information, pricing, business records and internal materials separate.
  • Conflicts of interest: Disclose relevant connections where required, especially if the businesses compete.
  • Company resources: Do not use one employer’s equipment, paid working time or accounts for the other job without permission.

Non-compete clauses are subject to legal requirements and are not automatically enforceable in every situation. Equally, a work permit does not automatically invalidate a contractual restriction. Get advice on the specific clause if the second role could create a dispute.

Situations that need a different check

Weekend work and paid trial shifts

A job does not become exempt from authorization because it takes place on Fridays, evenings or weekends. The same applies to a paid trial involving actual work.

For example, an office employee offered recurring weekend shifts by a mainland retailer should have the retailer confirm the appropriate permit before the first shift. Existing residence and free time are not sufficient authorization.

Freelancing alongside employment

Providing services to clients under your own name or business can be different from joining a second employer. A part-time employment permit is not a general freelance license.

If you intend to invoice several clients independently, review the distinction between employment and a UAE freelance permit and residence arrangement. Your activity, licensing authority and existing employment obligations determine what needs checking.

Combining mainland and free-zone roles

Do not assume that a mainland permit automatically satisfies a free zone’s rules, or vice versa. Ask the relevant authority and the prospective employer about the proposed combination.

This is particularly important where the role falls under a separate employment framework. The first question should be who regulates the work, not simply where the office is located.

Check the permit route before accepting the second role

Before committing, confirm the second employer’s regulator, the appropriate permit, any required employer consent and a workable schedule. Those checks are more useful than a general assurance that a second job is allowed.

Frequently asked questions

Often, yes. An eligible second employer may obtain the appropriate work permit without transferring your existing residence sponsorship. The correct route depends on your current status and both employers.

Family-sponsored residence does not automatically authorize employment. The hiring employer must obtain the appropriate work permit. Our guide to working in the UAE on a spouse’s visa explains that distinction in more detail.

No. Long-term residence and employment authorization are separate. A mainland private-sector employer generally still needs the applicable MoHRE work permit, and an additional role should be checked separately.

No. A tourist or visit visa does not authorize employment. Calling the role part-time, temporary or a trial does not remove the need for lawful work authorization.

No. Where an employment permit is required, wait for its approval. The NOC supports the application but is not itself permission from the relevant authority to start work.
